CHAPTER SIX

We’ve been playing Battlecry Online for three years now.  The Player Haters. We became the guild to fear. Bwahahahaha! The Legion made us, KOS, Kill On Sight. And for good reason.

We had some of the best gear in the game, the most money, some of the most talented fingertips, the best computers to work with, the best internet connection speeds, but more importantly, we attacked everyone we met. Even those who didn’t want to fight. They would try to run, but since we had elite mounts, we’d catch up and slaughter them. We, basically, lived up to our guild name. Yup. We were dicks.

But no one could touch us. Around the world, people knew who The Player Haters were. Avoid them at all costs, they would type to each other, they would advise on con programs, post on  online bulletin boards. They feared us across countries and continents, across the world. At least in the world of Battlecry.

It was something significant others just couldn’t understand.

Oliver’s girlfriend, Daisy had tolerated his hours upon hours of video game playing, for years. Never asked him to choose between gaming or going out to the movies, because, unfortunately, she knew what he would choose.

She’s an amazing woman. Stayed with, Oliver for twelve years. Daisy was there for him when he was on drugs. Spoon fed him food, wiped the sweat from his forehead, kept him indoors regardless of what names he was calling her. She helped him through school, paying for his tuition, his books, tutoring him in calculus, until he graduated. She helped him with his resume, adding this, taking out that, driving him to his interview, and paying for dinner when he got the job. She was devoted to him all because of that undeniable thing called, love.

Once, Oliver got that job as an insurance company telephone salesman, he decided it was time to commit his soul to hers, one hundred percent. Twelve years of courtship, hardship, relationship, these two, finally, are going to get married. He quit the game for her. He said it was time. He said she deserved it.

“So that’s it, huh.” Said, Bob, disappointed. ”No more Battlecry? No more ganking Legion? no more stealthing through the Ice Castle and assassinating the emperor?”

“Bob, behind you. There’s a hunter.” I warned. “He’s got the Macker’s Crossbow.”

“Nah. I’ll be on sometimes. Just not as much as I used to. I promised her.” Oliver said with a sigh. “I got that hunter.”

The Legion hunter had his sight set on, Bob’s rogue who was just standing there in the middle of the road. Little did he know, Oliver’s dwarf rogue, Fortyounce was stealthed waiting for an opportunity like this.

“Kind of funny how everyone attacks us even when we’re not doing shit.” stated, Jack.

“Well, ya know, Player Haters.” said, Rick. “everyone wants to tag us.”

The Legion hunter, who’s hiding behind a big rock formation off to the side of the road, thinking he had a free kill on, Bob, suddenly fell dead on the ground. Standing over his body was a short, stout, hooded dwarf, weilding two glowing daggers crackling with murderous magic.

“Gonna miss, Fortyounce.” said, Bob.

Bob’s rogue, Chopper, a dark blue elf, walked up to, Fortyounce and saluted the dwarf. The dwarf, in turn, saluted him.

“Hey, man. How about we attack Anvilcrack Fort for old time sakes?” suggested, Bob.

“Sure thing.” said, Oliver. “Anyone else?”

“I’ll go. Haven’t fought Legion in a long time. Work is killing me.” Said, Jack. “I might have to take a break from this game, too.”

“Damn. We’re losing everyone. “Said, Bob. “This is fucked up.”

“Well, signs of the times, my friend.” Said, Xavier. “This could mean you just might have to, dare I say it, get a job?”

“Whatever, Xavier.” Said, Bob. “Like you’re doing anything big in San Francisco.”

“Oh I am, brother.” I’m living normal.”

“We ready to do this?” Asked, Rick. “My wife wants me to take out the trash right now.”

“It’s cool.” Said, Oliver. “We’ll wait five, ten minutes. I got to heat up this mini-pizza.”

“Cool. Be right back.” said, Rick.

“Hey, guys. I’m moving back home.” Said, Xavier. “Coming back to the Valley.”

Why? What happened? Your chick kicked you out?” said, Bob.

“Nope.” Said, Xavier. “We’re breaking up.”

It became silent.

“Sorry to hear about that, bro.” Said, Oliver.

“It’s cool. It was bound to happen. Like you said, it was time.” Xavier said. “Anyway, it’ll be good to hang out with you guys again.”

Wow. Things sure were changing fast.

Online, we were the untouchable, invulnerable, guild to fear. The group of adventurers everyone knew and wanted to be like. We had castles and countries and armies of our own. Our flags flew over the majority of lands in Battlecry Online. In real life, however, we were just regular guys going through regular things. Some bad, some good, most of it, though, were things we just didn’t have control over.

When, Rick got back, we detroyed Anvilcrack Fort for old times sake.
